Information on Christopher
Columbus.
· Born 1451 in Genoa, Italy.
· Died 1506 in Valladolid, Spain.
· Father: Domenico Colombo, a wool merchant
· Mother: Suzanna Fontanarossa
· Education as a child is not known, but since his father was a wool merchant, he
would have most likely Italian Craft Guilds which offered a rudimentary amount of reading and writing.
Age 14, he served on numerous
ships in various roles, which include messenger and common sailor. He had his first long voyage in 1474 when he was hired
as a sailor for a ship bound for the Khios Island in the Aegean
Sea. In 1478 Columbus married
Felipa Perestrello e Monis who was the daughter of a well respected, yet poor, noble family. Soon after they were married,
Christopher and Felipa joined the rest of the family back to Porto Santo. He died 4 years after
last voyage in relative neglect.

“Saturday, 20 October (1492). At sunrise
we weighed anchor, and stood to the northeast and east along the south side of this island, which I named Isabela, and the
cape where we anchored, Cabo de la Laguna; in this direction I expected from the account of our Indians to find the capital
and king of the island. I found the coast very shallow, and offering every obstacle to our navigation, and perceiving that
our course this way must be very circuitous, I determined to return to the westward. The wind failed us, and we were unable
to get near the shore before night; and as it is very dangerous anchoring here in the dark, when it is impossible to discern
among so many shoals and reefs whether the ground be suitable, I stood off and on all night. The other vessels came to anchor,
having reached the shore in season.”
I think this is important because it points
out that Christopher and his crew finally found land, which he named Isabela. It seems they didn't quite make it to the shore
before nightfall, and Christopher is afraid that the anchor is not on steady ground. I bet they were all very happy since
it took so long.
